Ecole Pheonix Leadership Class - Making a difference

The Grade 7 Leadership Class from Ecole Pheonix Middle School recently presented the Campbell River Hospital Foundation with $500 towards the purchase of an Oximeter for the Campbell River Hospital Maternity Department. The Oximeter is used to monitor the amount of oxygen in the blood in a non-invasive way; therefore no needle and pain.  A light sensor is placed over the patients' finger or sometimes the earlobe and can be used to assess adults, children and babies The Campbell River Hospital Maternity Department uses the Oximeter with every newborn as a screening tool to check for Congenital Heart Defects that may not otherwise be immediately diagnosed.  It is also used each time that medical staff has to administer oxygen to a newborn as too much oxygen can be destructive to the lung tissues.
